La serie se centra en cuatro amigas que se reúnen un año después de que la “líder” del grupo, Alison (Sasha Pieterse), haya desaparecido. Las cuatro tienen además algo en común y es que están recibiendo mensajes de un anónimo que conoce los secretos que sabía Alison. La historia arranca realmente cuando el cuerpo de la joven aparece, pero el anónimo sigue enviando mensajes a las protagonistas. A clique of teenage girls drift apart after the group's leader, Alison DiLaurentis, goes missing. Her body is found and the girls are reunited at her funeral. All four begin receiving text messages from the mysterious 'A', who seems to know many of the group's deepest secrets, some of which only the late Alison had knowledge of.
